Baptist Press has
done an invaluable service to Southern Baptists and to the Gender Issues Office
by running an article every month dealing with some aspect of ministering to
same sex strugglers.
BP frequently runs
articles dealing with the issue of homosexuality in our nation which are very
informative but these articles are more ministry related.

“The Alabama Baptist” first ran this article and it was picked up by BP. It is an account of the first association to host training for pastors. It tells some of the background of my own understanding of this issue and provides insight into the pressing need for churches to address this issue.

The Alabama Baptist and Brittany Howerton did a great job of covering this story. In this article Brittany relates the powerful story of Kim Cowen. You simply have to read this incredible story. Another story of a struggler redeemed by Christians just being the church.
FIRST-PERSON: Reaching out with compassion
http://www.bpnews.net/bpnews.asp?id=31148
Posted on Aug 26, 2009 | by Judy Williams
This article was first published in “The Baptist Record”, the state Baptist paper in Mississippi. It describes the events which led to a joint effort by several entities in Mississippi to provide training for churches. This was an outstanding event and should be a model for others all across our Convention. Mississippi Baptists are following up with another state wide conference in 2010.
These
articles were all written by Bob Stith, the SBC Gender Issues Strategist. All
are intended to give the church insight into ministering to same sex
strugglers.
FIRST-PERSON: Same-sex attraction: Just a choice?
http://www.bpnews.net/BPFirstPerson.asp?ID=31580
10/29/2009
This is the most recent article published by Baptist Press for the Gender Issues office. It looks at the common misconception among some Christians that homosexuality is “just a choice.” It makes an important distinction between temptation and sin.

An article discussing conversations with many Southern Baptists telling about experiences with family members. This is an important article dealing with preparing parents to properly respond if a child or loved one discloses homosexual struggles.
The following three
articles were written by Mike Goeke of Stonegate church in Midland, Tx. Mike
has spoken and taught all over the United States. He has recently been involved
with the SBC Task Force on Ministry to Homosexuals. These are all excellent
articles and well worth the time. Every church should avail themselves of this
material.
FIRST-PERSON: A challenge to the conservative church 10/7/2009
http://www.bpnews.net/BPFirstPerson.asp?ID=31415
In this article Mike tells of a denomination which leans too far to the left in an attempt to be loving and compassionate. But he also has an excellent word of warning for conservative churches as well.

Mike here states that if the church will simply be the true church we already have what is most needed to help same sex strugglers. I have long been convinced of this and Mike’s own story further testifies to this truth.
These
articles are stories of those whose lives have been forever changed. They are
important first of all because they demonstrate clearly that change does
happen. They also reveal important points for our churches to think about in
ministering to same sex strugglers.

This is a really great story demonstrating just what the article “Be the Church” by Mike Goeke talks about. It is the testimony of a wonderful young lady who walked away from her involvement in lesbianism after becoming a part of the great First Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga. What a great testimony to a Sunday School department being what it should be.

Tim Wilkins tells a powerful story of a man who has attended Southern Baptist schools and served in SBC churches while struggling with homosexual desires. Tim is one of the original members of the SBC Task Force and has long pushed for the SBC to be more proactive in ministering to strugglers.
The following are
news articles published by BP. Some, such as the first one, are really eye
openers and should call for every Southern Baptist to be getting involved in a
proactive, redemptive way. The hour is late.
